With the big move to third grade this year I knew my TPT cart would be full of new and exciting resources to meet those third grade standards!  I have done my research, anxiously awaited the sale, and HERE IT IS!!!  Well, in a few days anyways.  I wanted to share with you some things I will be purchasing during the Love Back to School TPT Sale.

I knew coming from first that my thirdies were going to need a few different activities for Daily Five.  So here are some items I am purchasing to stock my work on writing area: 

 

These prompts from The Teacher's Toolbox look sooo kid friendly and integrate a variety of writing styles! 

These editing task cards from Rachel Lynette are going to be perfect for my work on writing to integrate proofreading skills and the kids will LOVE the fun facts.  They are also nice because each card has three errors....so my students don't have to guess if they have found them all.

In first grade we were always focusing so much time on phonics and decoding that I really feel I slacked in the fluency department.  I am a BIG FAN of fluent, expressive reading, so I am hoping to get it in with my thirdies!  After much research, I decided upon these from Ashleigh.  I love that they integrate science and social studies, areas we all know never get enough attention!

Multiplication/Division EEK!!  After teaching K and 1st....this is really a new adventure.  Hoping to use these puzzles for our fact fluency math rotation!

          

I have seen EVERYONE using interactive notebooks and am thinking about giving it a half shot this year!  These are two I am planning to purchase to help me.  The language one is from Nicole Shelby and the reading is from Melissa Mazur.

We just so happen to start school on a Wednesday this year so I saw this and thought it would be the perfect activity for Friday, after we are all EXHAUSTED! Thank you Not So Wimpy Teacher.

I plan to use these procedure task cards, courtesy of Fun in 5th, as a filler for the first few days of school.  They will be a good way to make sure all procedures are covered!

Well there you have it!  Don't tell my husband about this, because he would not be happy!!

Saturday Stray: Across the Curriculum and a FREEBIE!

The year is coming to a close and this time of the year is busy, busy, busy!  Here are some stray things that we have done this past week or so.  This post has a little bit of seasonal ideas, grammar, reading, and writing all mixed into one.  

I am hoping for at least one more week of sanity and then we are on the home stretch!  I have AMAZING parents currently sending in supplies to make our last 10 days SUPER fun, so check back to see what we have planned!

Mother's Day this year has seriously crept up on me.  Not only for my school kids, but also for my own family.  I saw this picture on pinterest a while back and because I teach at a religious school, I thought it was perfect!  Although I couldn't afford to buy frames for all the kids, I did cut them to a standard size so they could be framed if the parents wanted to.

 This page is adorable and super easy for first graders to do by themselves but there was no credit on the pdf I have so I don't know who it belongs to.  If you know, please let me know.

Many of our comprehension skills we have taught, reviewed, assessed and so on.  However, context clues was a first this past week.  Unlike the other comprehension skills, I think the creators of our basal series purposely put this skill towards the end so the kids would be more capable of understanding its complexity.

First, I introduced the skill with this file that I made to display whole class.  You can grab it as a FREEBIE by clicking the picture below!

Later in the week we read some Amelia Bedelia books!  I forgot how completely adorable these books are and how much I miss reading TO my kids.  It seems as the year goes on I find less and less opportunities to read to them.  It is sad that our day is sooo jam-packed that there is not much time for read alouds.  I need to work harder at that!  We just read the books and jotted down some thoughts about Amelia and her confusion because she didn't consider her context clues.

The past two weeks we have also introduced subjects and predicates.  I started off with something familiar that my kids LOVE.  Silly sentences is a great resource that I keep at work on words or even work on writing.  After making the sentences we went back and traced the subjects with red. 

The next day we worked on this skill I included the predicates and we sorted them.  I then had the kids write down one real sentence and one silly sentence.  Then we underlined the subject with red and the predicate with blue.  For a little more enrichment we even circled the verbs to point out the starting point to the predicate.

 I used this next activity as my informal assessment.  Once again there is no name to give credit to so if you know who this belongs to, please let me know.  The sheet had all the subjects and predicates mixed up. They first had to color the subjects red and predicates blue.  Then they had to match them to make REAL sentences.

Do you play battleship with your kids?  I stumbled upon this game during my student teaching and have used it for sight words and spelling words!  It is so much fun.  Basically the two kids have the same board.  They each get four markers to put on four words.  Then the kids just take turns guessing where their partners markers are.  If they guess correct they get to take their partners marker, or sink their ship!

Something a bit more personal:  We are sooo thankful spring weather is warming up and we are spending more and more time outside.  One of our favorite things to do is hitting up yard sales!  Here is a pic of little M heading out to check out some sales.

Work on Writing Daily Five Linky

Daily Five is an AMAZING and SUPER EASY approach to literacy centers.  If you haven't heard of Daily Five then you need to run now go check it out.  There is a a great book written by "The Sisters" that outlines everything you need to implement this approach in your classroom.

I am linking up with A Burst of First to share what we do for each of the fives in our classrooms.  Sadly, I missed the Word Work link up, but I do have our Word Work area in this post --> MY CLASSROOM.

Here is our word work area for my first grade class.  I did previously teach kindergarten so I want to make sure if any teachers are new to Daily Five that they know it looks much different in kindergarten.

By FAR my favorite thing in my work on writing area is our picture dictionaries and word strips.  These come in handy seriously EVERY DAY!!  I force myself to make the kids go there to find words rather than spell them for them. And very quickly, the kids become independent.

The second favorite thing at my work on writing area is the stencils and how to draw books!  Kids can get SO frustrated when trying to draw so these resources are life savers.

Movement, Sun, and a Wedding?!

I hadn't planned on blogging tonight, but here I am!  A fellow teacher pal needed some fresh ideas for a phonics lesson coming up and I suggested sit on it from the amazing Kelley Dolling author of Teacher Idea Factory!  She has sooo many, like overwhelming, pin pin pin for later EVERY SINGLE THING ideas!  As I was stalking reviewing her blog I came across a linky she was once doing.  Not sure if this is an active linky party or not, but I only had two days last week due to a sick kid and this week is Spring Break so I won't have much to share for a while.

Just before my secretary came in to tell me my daughter had come down with a fever we were reviewing sums of 10!  Here in Missouri the weather can be a bit unpredictable, but don't tell anyone I said it I think it may FINALLY be SPRING!!!  There have still been sporadic cool days, but we have also had sunny and 70 as well!  I can't fight the urge to get outside and soak up the sun as much as possible, even if we all have to be at school.

 I found this game for practicing sums of 10 from Nicole Bunt at First Grade Owls.  Best of all it is free!  We played with partners then did a boys vs. girls race!

If you haven't read my ABOUT ME section then you may have guessed I got hitched.  Well, my husband and I just recently celebrated our five year anniversary!  It was my little sis that finally tied the knot.  It was a one of our beautiful sunny days and an amazing amount of fun!

No Worksheet Wednesday #4

Sad to announce this is the last week of No Worksheet Wednesday!?  There have been so many great, engaging, worksheet free ideas shared this past month.  I cry because it's over, but smile because it happened.  A big thank you to the Primary Chalkboard for hosting!  If you would like to link up with your own worksheet free idea head on over there now!

 

This week I introduced cause and effect in some real ways the children were able to experience first hand!

I had only planned to use the egg dropping and popping the balloon as examples.  However, when I saw everyone holding their ears and their reactions to the balloon I was excited to add an effect we were experiencing right then!  I was also lucky that it was a rainy day and I really did see the postman walking with his umbrella to work.

We also started talking about synonyms early this week and I couldn't resist but make these adorable synonym rolls!  First, we sorted the words as a class and then the cards were used to play a find your match kind of game.  I will also be keeping these cards up for a work on words option for a while.
